Data Center Generator Decommissioning & Asset Recovery | We Buy Industrial Generators

9 min read

We get calls every week from data center operators looking to offload surplus generators during facility decommissions. Power Generation Enterprises buys used industrial generators — CAT 3516, Cummins QSK60, MTU 16V4000, Kohler 2000REOZD — from data centers across the country. We make cash offers, arrange all pickup and freight, and handle environmental compliance paperwork. Most of the 2MW+ units sitting in our yard right now came from data center decommissions. If you have backup power equipment you need to move, call (818) 484-8550 for a same-day quote.

What Is Data Center Decommissioning?

Data center decommissioning is exactly what it sounds like — a facility shuts down, and everything inside needs to go somewhere. Servers get wiped and scrapped. UPS systems get pulled. And the generators out back, the ones that kept the whole operation alive during utility failures, suddenly have no job to do.

We see this play out constantly. A hyperscaler consolidates three older facilities into one new build. A colocation provider loses their anchor tenant and cannot justify the overhead. A corporate campus migrates to the cloud and does not need 4MW of backup power anymore. The result is the same every time: perfectly good industrial generators sitting on concrete pads with nowhere to go.

That is where we come in. Power Generation Enterprises buys these generators. We have been doing it for years, and at this point, data center decommissions are one of our single biggest sources of inventory.

Why Data Centers Sell Their Generators

The math is simple. A 2MW diesel generator costs $15,000 to $25,000 a year to maintain even if it never runs outside of monthly testing. Fuel polishing, coolant changes, battery replacements, ATS testing, load bank testing — it adds up fast. Once a facility goes dark, that maintenance budget becomes pure waste.

Most data center operators we work with fall into one of these situations:

  • Facility closure or consolidation — The building is being vacated. The lease requires the pad to be cleared. There is a deadline and the generators need to move.
  • Capacity right-sizing — The facility upgraded to newer, higher-capacity units and the old generators are surplus. We see a lot of 1500KW units getting swapped out for 2000KW+ replacements.
  • Technology refresh — Operators moving from Tier 2 engines to Tier 4 Final for emissions compliance, or switching from diesel to natural gas. The old diesels still run fine but they do not fit the new environmental plan.
  • Corporate asset disposition — The finance team wants the equipment off the books. They need a clean sale, proper documentation, and a partner who can handle the logistics without disrupting ongoing operations at adjacent facilities.

Whatever the reason, the generators themselves are usually in excellent condition. Data center backup generators are the most pampered equipment in the industrial world. They run maybe 50 to 200 hours a year, they are housed in weatherproof enclosures, they get factory-scheduled maintenance, and they have been load-bank tested on a regular cycle. When we buy a generator from a data center, we are getting a unit that is barely broken in.

Generator Types We Buy from Data Centers

We buy every major brand, but data centers tend to standardize on a handful of platforms. Here is what we see most often rolling out of decommissioned facilities:

Caterpillar

The CAT 3516 is the workhorse of the data center world. We buy 3516B and 3516C models in 1750KW to 2250KW configurations all the time. If you have a row of 3516s behind your facility, we want them. We also pick up CAT C32 units (800-1250KW) from smaller data centers and edge facilities. These move fast in our yard because every contractor in the country knows the platform.

Cummins

The Cummins QSK60 is the other dominant data center platform. We buy QSK60 generators in 1500KW to 2500KW configurations, and the QSK50 in 1250-1500KW ranges. Cummins also shows up as the engine inside Cummins Power Generation (Onan) packaged gensets. If it says Cummins on it and it came from a data center, we are interested.

MTU

The MTU 16V4000 series is a favorite among European-designed data centers and several US hyperscalers. We buy 16V4000 generators in 1500KW to 2500KW ranges. MTU also shows up as MTU 12V4000 in mid-range applications. These are premium engines and they hold their value well on the resale market.

Kohler

Kohler 2000REOZD and 1500REOZD units are common in corporate data centers and colocation facilities. Kohler generators tend to come as complete, self-contained packages with integrated controls, which makes them easy to transport and redeploy. We buy Kohler generators in the 800KW to 2000KW range.

Other Brands

We also buy Generac industrial units, Baldor generators, Himoinsa, SDMO, and other OEM packages. If it is an industrial generator from a data center, call us. Even if we do not list the brand on our site, we buy it.

The PGE Buyback Process

We have bought generators from over a hundred data center decommissions at this point, so we have the process dialed in. Here is how it works when you sell your generators to Power Generation Enterprises.

Step 1: You Call Us or Fill Out the Form

Call (818) 484-8550 or visit our Sell Your Equipment page. Tell us what you have — make, model, kW rating, approximate hours, and how many units. If you have spec sheets or maintenance records, even better, but we do not need them to give you a ballpark number on the phone.

Step 2: We Make You an Offer

For standard models like the CAT 3516 or Cummins QSK60, we can usually give you a firm number within 24 hours. We know what these units sell for because we move them every week. For less common equipment, we may need photos or a site visit, but we will tell you upfront. Our offers are cash, and we do not play the game where the price changes after we show up.

Step 3: We Handle Pickup

This is the part that matters most to data center facility managers. You do not want to coordinate cranes, flatbeds, and rigging crews on top of everything else happening during a decommission. We arrange all of it. Our logistics team books the crane, schedules the flatbed or RGN trailer, coordinates with your site security and loading dock schedule, and handles all the transportation paperwork. You just tell us when the pad needs to be clear and we make it happen.

Step 4: Payment

We pay on pickup. Wire transfer, company check, whatever works for your accounting department. For large multi-unit deals, we can structure progress payments tied to pickup milestones. We have worked with Fortune 500 procurement teams and single-facility operators. We know how corporate purchasing works and we can handle whatever documentation your finance team needs for asset disposition.

Asset Recovery and Environmental Compliance

If you manage a data center, you already know that decommissioning is not just about moving equipment out. There is a paper trail that matters, especially for publicly traded companies and regulated industries.

What We Provide for Asset Recovery Documentation

  • Bill of sale with complete equipment descriptions, serial numbers, and asset tag references
  • Certificate of removal confirming equipment has been removed from your facility
  • Chain of custody documentation for your internal compliance records
  • Fair market value assessment for accounting and tax purposes
  • Environmental compliance certificates for coolant, oil, and fuel handling

Fluid and Hazmat Handling

Every generator we pick up has engine oil, coolant, and usually diesel fuel in the tank and day tank. We handle all fluid management during removal. Our crews drain and contain all fluids per EPA guidelines before transport. We do not leave puddles on your concrete pad and we do not leave you holding the bag on hazmat disposal. This is included in our pickup — we do not charge extra for it.

Multi-Unit Decommissions

Most data centers we buy from have between 4 and 20 generators on site. We have purchased as many as 36 units from a single facility. For multi-unit deals, we work with your project timeline. Maybe you need two units out this month and the rest over the next quarter as you phase down operations. We can stage pickups to match your decommission schedule. We have done phased buyouts over 6 months for large campus decommissions.

Nationwide Pickup

We buy generators from data centers in every state. Our yard is in Santa Clarita, California, but we have picked up equipment from Virginia, Texas, Oregon, Ohio, Georgia, Arizona — anywhere there are data centers. Distance does not affect our offer price. We factor freight into our numbers and we have carrier relationships across the country that keep transport costs reasonable.

We buy a lot of generators and our offers are competitive. Call (818) 484-8550 or visit Sell Your Equipment to get started.

Tips for Selling Your Data Center Generators
1
Have Your Maintenance Records Ready
The single biggest factor in what we pay — besides make and model — is documentation. A generator with complete service records, load bank test results, and hour meter verification is worth 15-25% more than the same unit with no paperwork. If you have a CMMS system, pull the maintenance history before you call us. If your maintenance contractor has the records, get copies. This is money in your pocket.
2
Know Your Hour Meter Reading
Hours matter more than age for generators. A 2015 unit with 80 hours is worth significantly more than a 2019 unit with 800 hours. Data center standby generators typically have very low hours, and that is a selling point. Check the hour meter on each unit before you call. If the hour meter was replaced at some point, note the reading when the new one went in. We will ask about this.
3
Include the ATS and Switchgear If You Can
A generator with its matching automatic transfer switch and paralleling switchgear is worth more than the genset alone. If you are decommissioning the entire backup power system, sell it as a package. The switchgear has standalone resale value, and the matched set is easier for us to resell to the next buyer. Mention what switchgear brand you have — ASCO, Russelectric, Zenith, Eaton — when you call.
4
Sell Before You Have To
If your decommission timeline is 90 days out, call us now. Rushed sales always get lower prices because the buyer knows you have a deadline. When we have time to plan the logistics and schedule a convenient pickup window, everyone gets a better deal. The worst time to sell is when your landlord is billing you daily penalties for not clearing the site.
5
Get Multiple Quotes But Be Realistic
Shop around — we expect it. But be wary of brokers who quote high to lock up your equipment and then renegotiate after they fail to find a buyer. We give you a real number upfront because we are buying the generator for our own inventory, not trying to flip it to someone else. If another dealer offers 30% more than us for the same unit, ask them when they last bought one. We buy generators every week.
